The discovery of new planets in distant galaxies has become an interesting topic in astronomy. This planet is located about 90 light years from Earth in the constellation Eridanus. TOI-1231 b is categorized as sub-Neptune, with a mass smaller than that of Uranus and Neptune. With a diameter of about 2.9 times that of Earth, this planet also has an atmosphere that may contain water. This discovery is based on data from the TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) Space Telescope, which monitors thousands of stars to detect exoplanets. Next, another planet that steals the attention is LHS 475 b. This planet is located about 41 light years away and has a mass similar to Earth. The discovery of LHS 475 b is very significant because it is one of the first exoplanets discovered with a size similar to Earth. Scientists think that the environment on LHS 475 b could provide further insight into the potential for life beyond Earth. Detecting the habitability of this new planet involves various parameters, such as distance from the host star and atmospheric composition. Scientists are particularly interested in the concept of a habitable zone, or Goldilocks zone, where temperature conditions could allow the existence of liquid water. Further research is often carried out to study the characteristics of planetary atmospheres. Using data from spectroscopy, astronomers can study the composition of the exoplanet’s atmosphere, including detecting the presence of elements such as carbon dioxide, methane, and, more importantly, water vapor. This analysis provides an idea of the possibility of life existing on the planet. New technologies, such as the JWST (James Webb Space Telescope), launched in 2021, are expected to provide more in-depth information about the atmosphere and weather on exoplanets. The successful discovery of this new planet not only enriches our knowledge of the universe but also fosters interest in the search for extraterrestrial life. Many scientists believe that as technology advances, more planets will be discovered, even those with Earth-like characteristics. Estimates suggest that there are millions of exoplanets in our galaxy alone, and each one holds the potential for further exploration. International astronomy projects, such as ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA, continue to collaborate on research to discover new planets. They hope the upcoming discovery will help answer one of the most fundamental questions in science: whether we are alone in the universe.
